Lobby Day at the California Capitol with the Convention of States Team

California Capitol Sacramento

Convention of States is a nationwide non-partisan project to restore our Constitutional Republic by working with our representatives on three critical areas:

  • Impose fiscal restraints
  • Propose term limits
  • Reduce the size and power of the federal government

Prominent endorsers include Sen. Rand Paul, Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Gov. Mike Huckabee, Hon. Ben Carson, Gov. Greg Abbott, Gov. Mike Dunleavy, Rep. Chip Roy and Sen. Mark Rubio and The Heritage Foundation.

From a lawyer: “The COS project is a non-partisan project for structural reform of the federal government; it neither supports nor opposes any particular candidate.”

Talking to representatives and staffers in “the corridors of power”

From a new volunteer:

“When I saw the gleaming white capital building and the stately rotunda framed by two huge oak trees I felt the wave of pride that I felt on my school field trips when I saw the capitols in New Jersey and Washington, DC.

“The team of about 12 volunteers was gathered around a popup tent in front of the capitol, off to the side. Alison, our California Grass Roots Coordinator, was busy coordinating the day’s activities. Andrew, our Western Region Director, was enthusiastically welcoming the volunteers. When we were dispersed to our assignments Glenn sent us off properly with a short prayer.

“I was privileged to have Andrew as my team partner for the morning appointments. All of the staffers who we met with were polite and welcoming and listened patiently to our pitch. Many had not heard the term “Convention of States” and the flyers that were prepared for us by Alison and the national COS team were very helpful.

“My afternoon team partner’s name was Sunni (‘S-U-N-N-I,’ she specified in one of the meetings with the staffers.) She wore a black and white print bandana in her hair, tied up in a top knot. She had the energy of Sally Fields in Norma Rae. Sunni is the embodiment of a Fearless Soul. It’s making me smile to think about it – at an unexpected moment, like getting out of a crowded elevator, Sunni would break into a superhero pose and declare, ‘Yeah!’ It made my eyebrows and the corners of my mouth go up and it startled and delighted the people around us.

“Sunni shared talking points from her clipboard, like ‘All legislative power is vested in Congress but they don’t follow our original Constitution, they follow the Supreme Court’s Constitution’ (the four-inch thick collection of Supreme Court interpretations of the original document that is brief and concise and inspired). Another talking point on her board is ‘Those who are in D.C. may seem OK because they were elected but the problem is the longer they stay in D.C. the more they become tied in with the bureaucracies.’ So true.

“In California the two current U.S. Senators are both Democrats. There are 32 Democrats in the California State Senate and eight Republicans. There are 62 Democrats in the California State Assembly and 18 Republicans. These are the elected representatives who have to approve the Convention of States proposal under Article V of the Constitution.

A representative’s staffer

“Many of the staffers are fresh-faced college graduates with degrees in political science and public administration. I saw a bright future for our government in those faces. Other staffers are battle-hardened veterans of government who minced no words when they heard triggering words like “term limits” and “corruption” – we learned right away when we were in hostile territory but they all were polite and cordial. There was only one occasion when it felt like we had entered ‘the belly of the beast.’ That conversation was polite like all the others but clearly “skeptical,” to put it politely. We knew from our COS training that there is some opposition to the Convention of States project for several understandable but we think invalid reasons. As Sunni likes to say, ‘We have to work together.’ “

The two current California Senators

Mark Meckler, one of the national COS leaders, recently said:

“We are currently working around the clock in state legislatures across the country to further the COS movement. And yet we are continually finding people who claim to be on the side of “liberty” and the “Constitution” but who are urging state legislators to disregard and throw out Article V — a foundational part of the very document they claim to love. They say that they’re allies in the liberty movement, but they are now working alongside Hillary Clinton, George Soros, and 250 progressive organizations to sow confusion and doubt among state legislators. But there are only two sides in this fight. And it’s time people more clearly understand who’s standing on each side of the battle line. That’s why we’ve created this POWERFUL free downloadable that illustrates exactly who is with us and, perhaps even more importantly, who is against us. It’s time that the American people know the truth.”

The volunteers paid for their own travel and lodging expenses. Some of our materials and the Domino’s pizza lunch were covered by the COS donors.
